Example: a hardware wholesaler with thousands of products

Hardware wholesaler Van Dijk carries thousands of products from dozens of suppliers and delivers to hundreds of regular customers, each with their own pricing agreements. Here's how Odoo ties purchasing, inventory and sales together for them. A few large regular customers also order through an EDI connection straight into Odoo, so those orders arrive without any manual entry too.

  1. 1. Automatic reorder proposals

Every product has a minimum stock level set. If the stock of a box of screws or a bucket of paint drops below it, Odoo automatically generates a purchase proposal with the regular supplier — nobody has to watch stock levels by hand.

  2. 2. Customer-specific pricing

Every customer has their own tiered discounts or net prices, set up as a pricelist in the Sales app. When a quote or order is created, Odoo automatically applies the right price, without the salesperson recalculating it line by line.

  3. 3. Stock across multiple warehouses

Van Dijk has two warehouse locations. Odoo Inventory shows in real time where a product is and which route it follows — if a product is out of stock at the nearest location, the other one is automatically suggested. Warehouse staff work with the Barcode app: scanning a product and a location automatically drives the right putaway location, and during busy periods several orders are collected together in one round through wave picking instead of order by order.

  4. 4. Delivery and invoicing

Once the order is picked and delivered, Odoo automatically creates the invoice from that same sales order — with the right pricing agreement and VAT, ready to send.

  5. 5. Margin visibility per customer and product

Because purchase price, sales price and discounts all live in the same system, Van Dijk sees the margin per customer and per product group directly in a report — no separate spreadsheet work.

The result

One system for purchasing, inventory, sales and invoicing: automatic reorder proposals, customer-specific pricing, stock across multiple locations and direct margin visibility. Adding another supplier, warehouse or pricing agreement is just data entry, not custom development.
